One of our favorite Gus-isms

Visit to California in 1995

Out on one of their many visits to California, Gus and Elmer stopped by our home to meet their grand niece, (our daughter) Sofie for the first time.  We always loved getting their Christmas letter each year, telling us about their wonderful travels and events and people they had visited with each year.  We did not get to see them often, but so enjoyed their company and were grateful to them for coming all the way out to San Clemente to visit us on that day.  After a great dinner and wonderful evening of laughter and conversation, it was time for them to head out.  So, we all walked out together to say our goodbyes and they got into their rental car and waved.  Elmer was not too familiar with the rental car…and it was dark.  But, he was sitting up straight and confident and he gave us one last wave before putting the car into reverse to head down our steep driveway.  All the while, Gus waved and smiled sweetly at us out of the passenger window.  They were both so happy.  The car rolled back to the end of the driveway a bit too fast and bottomed out, making a horrible and seemingly metal-bending SCREEEEEEECH as the undercarriage united with the concrete.  Gus, still smiling, rolled the window down and simply said, “Crunchy, crunchy!”…and to this day, we all say that very phrase anytime our car rubs or bumps the road.   Our family loved Gus and we will miss him.
